District of Choice Facts
The governing board of any school district may elect to accept interdistrict transfers under the “District of Choice” provision authorized under California Education Code sections 48300 through 48316. Under this provision, the school district of choice determines the number of transfer pupils it is willing to accept and must ensure that pupils admitted are selected through a random, unbiased process that prohibits an evaluation of whether or not the pupil should be enrolled based on his or her academic or athletic performance.
Applications for transfer under this provision must be received by January 1 of the subsequent school year for which the pupil is requesting a transfer. The deadline for final written notice of transfer acceptance and rejection is February 15. The board has until May 1 to fill vacancies on a wait list, and no students are accepted after May 1.
School districts of choice must give first priority for attendance to siblings of children already in attendance in the district, second priority to students eligible for free or reduced-price meals, and third priority to children of military personnel. (Education Code § 48306.)

                   Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

1. When will District of Choice (DOC) applications be available?
District of Choice applications will be available from November 1 to December 31, 2021. Note: The District Office closes for winter break December 17, 2021 at noon, and reopens on January 3, 2022. DOC applications MUST be postmarked on or before December 31, 2021.
2. Where can I get an application? Applications will be available at the district office located at 1300 Moody Lane, Geyserville. You may pick up an application between 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (until noon on Dec. 18, 2020). Applications are available to print any time from this page. See above. If you have any questions, please contact our office at 707-857-3592.
3. When are applications due? Applications are due no later than January 1, 2022 ---After December 17, all applications need to be mailed with a postmark no later than December 31. APPLICATIONS RECEIVED AFTER THAT DATE WILL NOT BE PROCESSED. ADDITIONALLY, DUPLICATE OR INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
4. Will there be a lottery drawing? If we receive more applications than we have seats available for a particular grade level, a random drawing will be held at a GUSD Board Meeting. Priority will be given to students with siblings already in attendance in GUSD, children of military service members, and students on free/reduced price meal programs. You do not need to be present at this meeting.
5. When will parents know if they have been accepted under DOC? Do I need to notify my home district? Parent notification will be mailed out to all applicants by February 14, 2021.
GUSD will notify your home district.
6. Does each child in the family need a separate application? Yes, parents need to complete an application for each child.
7. If I currently have another child attending GUSD under DOC in a previous year, do my other children automatically enter GUSD on a DOC status? No. Each child in the family must apply and be accepted separately. Example: You have a child about to enter Kindergarten who already has a sibling in the GUSD enrolled via DOC. You must still submit an application for the Kindergartner.
8. Can I mail in my application? Yes, the application can be returned by U.S. Mail to: Geyserville Unified School District Care of Shannon Marckx, 1300 Moody Lane, Geyserville, CA 95441 and must be postmarked no later than December 31, 2021.
10. Do I have to re-submit an application every year? No. Students maintain enrollment in GUSD through the life of the DOC statute. However, if you move within the GUSD boundaries, you will lose your DOC status and enroll as a resident. As well, if you remove your child from our district and enroll elsewhere, your student will lose his/her DOC status.
11. What are the age requirements for Transitional Kindergarten or Kindergarten? Transitional Kindergarten is for children turning 5 years of age with birthdays between September 2 - December 2. Kindergarten children must be 5 years of age on or before September 2.
